Taxidermy Works
Recently, I’ve been experimenting with new materials - taxidermy and forms of preservation. My sculptures often pair together the fleetingness of life with the permanence of plastic as a non-biodegradable material.
These new sculptural works express grief, existentialism, and examine the value of life. Questioning the manufactured values put in place by capitalist and colonial systems. Plastic has become a symbol of cheap production, exploitation and waste; this plus it’s natural non-decaying properties make it one of the most frequent cultural signifiers of mortality. If one were to cast a spell or perform a ritual of perpetuity, plastic might make a useful charm or talismen.
The space I hold for these small animals translates into space I hold for myself and others in my communities. All animal remains are sourced ethically.
