Winona Julian (she/they) is an emerging artist and arts administrator residing in Mokhkinstsís (Calgary, AB). She completed her BFA with distinction at Alberta University of the Arts (2020) with a major in Media Arts and a minor in Animation. For almost a decade, Winona has worked in arts administration &#38;amp; gallery assistance at several arts focused organizations within Calgary. In 2022, she was the lead organizer of the Particle &#38;amp; Wave Festival, an annual media arts festival held by EMMEDIA which consists of exhibitions, screenings and an audiovisual performance. In her own artistic practice, Winona has recently exhibited work in the Marion Nicoll Gallery, TRUCK Contemporary Art, Exposure Photo Festival, and within National Access Arts Centre programming. Winona has also recently been featured in film screenings with Struts Gallery and Nextfest. Currently, she works at The New Gallery as their Programming Co-Director in collaboration with Cristina Wang. She also facilitates &#38;amp; curates TNG's online exhibition space, "Mainframe".Currently in her artistic practice, she explores themes of death, transformation, and the mystical, utilizing animal remains and plastics as core elements of her work. Through the use of organic materials and synthetic substances, she explores the balance between nature and artificiality. Shaping these materials into powerful symbols of resilience and transformation, her artwork encourages a dialogue about the cycles of existence. These works become coping mechanisms aimed at the pressures of the unpredictable future and the haunting consequences of the past through the repurposing of cultural themes and ideology. Each piece invites viewers to confront their relationship with the natural world and the remnants it leaves behind, while also questioning the impact of consumerism and environmental degradation. Magik serves as an underlying thread throughout her work, invoking the unseen forces that shape our realities. Her artwork invites audiences to explore the intersections of life and death.

--Media Arts--In her media arts practice she explores the routines of normalcies within new media, which once examined in detail, tend to be strange and alienating. Within this context she delves into ideas surrounding mental health and coping mechanisms where an understanding of new media is innate. She focuses on the pressures of the unpredictable future and the haunting consequences of the past through the repurposing of cultural themes and ideology. Her use of humour parallels those disseminated online through new media and streaming services in order to tap into the collective subconscious of a digital generation. The result is an image-based critical self-awareness, that confronts, interrogates, and explores with the audience these expressive and enigmatic new cultural artifacts. The result of this research manifests as a mixture of performance and video work that is unsettling, bizarre and self aware.

		<description>

Taxidermy &#38;amp; Spell Works

Recently, I’ve been experimenting with new materials - taxidermy and forms of preservation.&#38;nbsp; My sculptures often pair together the fleetingness of life with the permanence of plastic as a non-biodegradable material.
These new sculptural works express grief, existentialism, and examine the value of life. Questioning the manufactured values put in place by capitalist and colonial systems. Plastic has become a symbol of cheap production, exploitation and waste; this plus it’s natural non-decaying properties make it one of the most frequent cultural signifiers of mortality. Thinking of magik in terms of modernity, if one were to cast a spell or perform a ritual of perpetuity, plastic might make a useful charm or talismen.

The space I hold for these small animals translates into space I hold for myself and others in my communities. All animal remains are sourced ethically.Through folk magic, Stregheria (Italian neo-paganism) and ritualism, I’ve learned to look for the energy, intention, and unseen forces which shape our experiences in ways we often overlook. Rituals, symbols, and connections to the natural world have given me a deeper understanding of both myself and the universe around me.

A small halo made out of a Dollarama costume headband is used to stage each photograph. In this instance, the use of the halo references its use in many cultures throughout history, the circle being a powerful symbol of the cycle of life and death. The use of this cheap, plastic and mass-produced material calls attention to the value we place on objects and living beings within a capitalist society. These images and sculptural elements honor each animal that has passed on, showing them one final act of care and consideration.

Sculpturally, each photograph is set within a modified frame, each frame is unique and features the remnants of spellwork and ritual. These sculptural elements renew the purpose of second-hand photo frames and found-objects (often found littered throughout the city) which carry their own histories and energy. Magik serves as an underlying thread throughout the work, through the practice and process of Stregheria (Italian Neo-Paganism) I hope to invoke the unseen forces that shape our realities. Each framed photograph acts as a charm or talisman, employing ancestral knowledge as an act of care and resilience against the unjust systems we navigate in our daily lives.

These works have become my own personal coping mechanisms aimed at the uncontrollable and turbulent state of our current world. I hope that each of my pieces becomes a site of care for viewers, helping them to feel less alone in each of their unique grieving and healing processes. Each piece invites viewers to confront their relationship with the natural world and the remnants it leaves behind, while also confronting the impact of consumerism and environmental degradation, leaving room to grieve for that which we cannot control.

Current // Process + Place

Video directed, filmed &#38;amp; edited by Winona JulianCurrent // Process + Place was curated by Bridgette Badowich with curatorial assistance from Winona Julian
Current brings together the works and creative processes of Calgary artists through installation, performance and socially engaged practice. At times ecological, social and deeply rooted in process, Current invites artists to slow down and work directly within the liminal space of the river's edge, the histories it holds, its riparian habitat, transition to the urban environment, and the material relations both carried and deposited.Artist participation is site-specific, and interventions are simultaneously temporary, time-based and socially engaged. Current merges an outdoor exhibition program with musical and movement-based performance, installation, sound, participatory workshops and facilitated interdisciplinary tours.Current works with these concepts at the river’s edge in Moh’kins’tsis, Wîchîspa, Guts’ists’i and Calgary, a place of continued generational significance to the Nations of the Blackfoot Confederacy (the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai), the Stoney Nakoda (the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and the Goodstoney), the Tsuut’ina First Nation and the Métis Nation within Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).Curator:Bridgette Badowich an artist, administrator, and interdisciplinary practitioner and based in Treaty 7 territory in Mohkinstsis.Her practice spans drawing, photo-based methods, sculpture, and rudimentary craft to investigate elemental formation and materiality in relation to time, memory, and place, and the notion of nostalgia as personal artefact. Grounded in a relational exploration of how places, materials, and histories connect to one another, this work unfolds through an autoethnographic lens in close dialogue with her landscape practice.Bridgette is a graduate of the University of Calgary (MLA, 2025) and Emily Carr University of Art + Design (BFA, 2016) and was recently named a 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale Fellow and LAF Olmsted Scholar. Her work has been developed through residencies at Coppermoss (Tuwanek, BC), Nes (Skagaströnd, Iceland), and Obras (Évoramonte, Portugal).Graphic Designer:Claudia Weigelsberger

Curated by Beth Kane and Jasmine Piper, Here, Together presents the work of twelve artists who share life on Treaty 7 territory. Through diverse identities and lived experiences, these artists explore how they belong, find home, and make relationships with this place. However these questions are answered, we all have one thing in common; where we are.

The exhibition features six public art presentations across Mohkinstsis and Treaty 7, in spaces where the artwork can live and breathe on the land it was created. Through encounters with other people’s stories - some familiar, some new - these installations inspire empathy and care for those around us. The artists are in conversation with one another, sharing space and perspectives on what it means to be here, together.

In February 2026, NaAC artist Kathy M. Austin hosted the creative intensive, Cryptids on the Margins. Using cryptids as a connecting theme, Kathy took participants on a creative journey to explore performance, visual art, and writing. The work created through this intensive was exhibited at DIALOG Architectural Firm in April. This event was part of the Curatorial Practices Program, which invited 6 NaAC artists to learn about curating and curate an exhibition of their own! This program is graciously supported byCalgary Arts Development
