Bad Visions from Cyberspace is a group show of experimental video art curated by Winona Julian. It explores contemporary issues and visual memes of everyday cyber culture. This exhibition brings together a group of emerging artists, all of whom are members of a generation where an understanding of new media is innate. These artists share a fascination with the repurposing of cultural themes and ideology. The resulting video work surveys the bizarre and intuitive relationships between ideology and modern media. Although these video works pull from many different cultural references, they emerge through the creative process as new, hybridized, but truly original entities unto themselves. The often humorous scenes parallel those disseminated online through social media and streaming services in order to tap into the collective subconscious of a digital generation. The result is an image-based critical self-awareness, that confronts, interrogates, and and explores with the audience these expressive, and enigmatic new cultural artefacts.

Artist Biographies:

Alice Schoenberg is a queer identifying, interdisciplinary artist as well as a current undergraduate at the Alberta College of Art + Design, living in Calgary. Her work is targeted towards creating a dialogue based on theories of social epistemology, specifically in the exploration of the nature of social truths and their circulation. These explorations include both direct visual manifestations of the theory itself, as well as explorations of various case studies of social systems, an example being the system of gender in relationship to obligations of safety, strength and self defence. This manifests through performance and video work, with a very active role of the body. ︎ www.aliceschoenberg.com
