Collaboration by Majdoline Azzi and Winona Julian. BEFORE DAWN was written by Majdoline Azzi, she is a first generation Calgarian poet of Berber descent. Having been raised Muslim, and breaking from tradition, her writing is informed by this divergence. For this piece, Majdoline explored the Hermetic Principle of Correspondence, and how that’s reflected in her own experiences. Her love of poetry began while attending the University of Calgary's English program. Most recently Majdoline has contributed to a group publication for SASS (Society for the Advocacy of Safer Spaces) based in Calgary, Alberta. Winona Julian is a femme media artist who completed her BFA at Alberta University of the Arts (2020) with a Major in Media Arts and a minor in Animation. Her work delves into ideas surrounding mental health and modern coping mechanisms. She focuses on the pressures of the unpredictable future and the haunting consequences of the past. The result of her research manifests as video work that uses bright colours, disconcerting imagery, distorted sound, and loose narratives. Her poem Savoury Emotions, Abrasive People was recently published in Issue 3 of The Pidgin Collectives text based zines. Both Majdoline and Winona are currently practicing in Mohkinstsís (Calgary).
